Sago Palms are loved all over the world and they are so easy to grow that it’s easy to see why they’re a favorite in landscapes throughout our area. Cycas revoluta (botanical name) is not actually a palm at all, these Japanese natives are cone bearing cycads that can trace their origins back to the ancient flora of the early Mesozoic era! In fact, while the earth has been evolving and the dinosaurs are gone, these “living fossils” are still with us, having changed very little in the last 200 million years. We like to plant them in groups, where they can create a lush tropical hedge ideal for borders and blocking unwanted views. And while they are more closely related to a pine tree than a palm tree, as they mature, they will start to resemble a stunning small palm, adding a unique tropically look wherever they are planted!

As stated earlier, Sago Palms are one of the easiest plants to grow and care for. They can be grown outdoors in a spot where there is full sun exposure and they can also be a stunning indoor houseplant when placed in a room with bright light. Just let them grow because once established, they can tolerate neglect with just low to moderate water requirements. These cycads can live for many years, so they can be enjoyed by generations to come!

At Big Tex Tree Nurseries, we have Sago Palms available in a wide range of sizes. These are slow growing, so if you’re looking to bring natural maturity to your site right away, buy as big as you can.
