DESCRIPTION

Bald Cypress

Taxodium distichum

  • Performs exceptionally well in full sun environments
  • Grows at a medium rate
  • Spreading canopy that produces dense shade
  • Reddish or orangish-brown in autumn

The Bald Cypress tree is the classic Southern shade tree, noted for its spreading canopy capable of blocking sunlight and providing dense shade where you need it most! We love to plant them around the home, where they can help cool off hotter rooms. They grow at a medium rate and can grow to be large trees with feathery, delicate yellow-tinged foliage that turn an orange-toned brown before dropping their leaves. Unlike many other conifers, Taxodium distichum are deciduous and shed their leaves earlier than most, which is how it got its “bald” name. This tree goes through cycles – it grows in a pyramidal shape before turning into a columnar shape in adulthood. No matter what stage of life it’s in, it is an impressive tree that will add curb appeal and bring value and beauty to any property, whether planted as a specimen or in masses!

Bald Cypress trees can tolerate most any type of soil and even extremely wet conditions, so they are an excellent choice for any Houston landscape. They love to grow where they can get plenty of full sun exposure and once establish do just fine with low to moderate water use.
