Cupaniopsis anacardioides

  • Other common names include Tuckeroo, Beach Tamarind and Green-Leaved Tamarind
  • Uniquely shaped evergreen shade tree
  • Provides year round shade and privacy
  • Unique branch pattern resembles the carrot-top of its namesake
  • Extremely hardy and does very well in Houston's climate

The Carrotwood tree, botanical name Cupaniopsis anacardioides, is a tough Australian native and we love to plant them in our area as a great alternative to the common Oak trees seen throughout Houston. It’s a medium-sized evergreen tree with a unique branch pattern and trunk that funnel inward, producing the “stem” of the “carrot.” It also has a dark gray outer bark covering an inner bark that is often orange in color. All of these unique characteristics give it its carrot-like resemblance and lend itself to adding a picturesque look to any landscape. Plus, unlike the easy-to-pull-out vegetable, this extremely hardy tree’s dense dark green canopy and twisted trunk and branch protects it from the wind and inclement weather, while also being able to provide a generous amount of year-round shade!

The Carrotwood tree thrives in the climate of Houston, where it takes well to clay-type soils and high moisture environments. It has a slow to moderate growth rate and loves to grow in an area that gets plenty of full sun exposure. Once established, this water wise tree will require low to moderate water use.

Available as a single trunk or multi-trunk tree, a bigger specimen is a good choice for a tire swing, providing fun times galore and creating memories that can last a lifetime! We also love to plant them as an attractive privacy screen, and with proper placement on your property, they can also be used to cool off a hot room inside your home, so plant a few and you might be using your air conditioner a lot less during those hot spells!
