Wisteria

Wisteria floribunda

  • Other common name Japanese Wisteria
  • Fast growing vine / Deciduous
  • Good on trellis or fence
  • Incredible blooms in spring with a delicious scent
  • Works well in most landscapes and can be trained into a tree-like form

Wisteria is a vigorous climber with dramatic clusters of fragrant blue-violet flowers cascading in the spring. In the 1830’s, Wisteria floribunda was brought from Japan to the United States and ever since then it has become a favorite flowering garden plant. It is easy to see why they are so well-received, the incredible springtime blooms attract hummingbirds, and many people love the enticing fragrance of the showy flowers. Of course, it is not just the bloom that is so attractive, the dense green foliage is a perfect match, which is why they are so suitable for growing against a house wall, fences, trellises, and arbors. These are long-lived climbers, so plant them in a location where the deliciously scented flowers will be enjoyed for years!

Caring for Wisteria is easy. These plants thrive in full sun or part shade, though full sun exposure yields the best flower production. Once established, they can tolerate drought and require little to moderate watering. Control the size and shape with pruning, which can also promote flowering. Wisteria floribunda is tolerant of many soils and harsh sites, so they are ideally suited for the Houston area!
