This unique-looking flower is large and bird-like, with orange, blue and white flower heads that brings the look of the tropics to any Houston landscape. Native to South Africa, it’s commonly called the Tropical Bird of Paradise and along with its unique flower, this evergreen also features crowns of long stalks with large green foliage, so it can provide year-round interest wherever you have them planted. We love to plant them as an accent, where they look especially nice near patios and swimming pools. We also like to plant them with other tropical looking plants such as Hibiscus, Lantana, Plumbago or Palm trees, where they can add instant curb appeal that is sure to leave a lasting impression!

Don’t have a green thumb? Tropical Bird of Paradise are easy to grow, low maintenance plants, though they do have a slow growth rate, so buy as big as you can if you want to have that exotic, tropical look right away. They are also drought tolerant once established with low to moderate water requirements, so if you’re looking for a waterwise plant, this is a good choice!
