Loropetalum (Loropetalum chinense)
- Also known as Chinese fringe-flower, Chinese Witch Hazel
- A member of the Witch hazel family
- Other cultivars available in a vast array of colors
- Great for use as a screen or foundation plants
One look at the long, thin petals of the fringe-like blooms and it’s easy to see why Loropetalum is also called the Chinese fringe-flower. Native to China and Japan and introduced to the U.S. in 1880, these attractive evergreen shrubs are versatile enough for a broad range of landscape applications. They feature deep green leaves that contrast beautifully with the mass of white flowers. The flowers bloom heavily in early spring, creating a fantastic display of color that you must see to believe. There are other cultivars available in other eye-catching foliage and flower colors too. We love to plant them together as a bright screen or hedge to block unwanted views in style, or as foundation plants along the edge of a home.
Loropetalum is a fast growing shrub and love to grow where there is plenty of full sun to partial sun exposure for the best foliage color. These vibrant plants require low to moderate watering once established and they can tolerate any pruning. They also look beautiful when they are left to grow in their natural form. With the proper fertilization, Chinese fringe plants can be a beautiful large specimen that adds curb appeal and beauty!
